SPRING EQUINOX WALK
To mark the beginning of spring we are organizing a special celebratory early morning sunrise walk.
We start at 5am at the Brockagh Resource Centre inLaragh Village, to be on time for that magical moment when the sun bursts up over the Irish Sea and across the mountains to mark the official beginning of Spring.
Twice a year, around March 20th & 21st and September 22nd & 23rd, the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night are nearly equal in all parts of the world. The word “equinox” derives from the Latin words meaning “equal night” and refers to the time when the sun crosses the equator.
You will be transferred from Laragh to the beginning of the walk at Trooperstown Wood by minibus.
From here the trail follows a forest road and track onto Paddock Hill to reach the Gossoon Stones before sunrise. The stones are standing between Paddock Hill and Scarr Mountain and are two of the most unassuming standing stones you would expect to see. The stones are set 1.75m apart (on a North-South axis), and stand little more than 1m high.
After the sunrise we will take the Wicklow Way down into the Glenmacnass Valley, cross the side of Brockagh Mountain and into the valley of Glendalough. If time permits we will visit the old ruined Monastic Settlement and walk around the Lower Lake.
Our walk takes us back into Laragh Village where we will finish with a Champagne Breakfast in the Wicklow Heather Restaurant.
The cost: €35 per person to include a 3-hour dawn guided walk and a Champagne Breakfast, your guide for this fascinating event is our colleague Liz Murray.
